Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast
The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Sunshine Coast was held on 15th September 2013. Close to 2000 athletes took part in the event, with their supporters lining the course to offer encouragement and support. In 2014 over 3000 athletes registered to take part in the second Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast event. The IRONKIDS event is held the day before. The 2015 Ironman is during the second weekend of September. With these events having the start / finish line in Mooloolaba athletes are part of the tradition of multi-sport events the Sunshine Coast is known for, including the Mooloolaba Triathlon which is held in March, and the Noosa Triathlon which is held later in the year.
Introduced in 1978 on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, the Ironman triathlon is the benchmark against which endurance sporting challenges are measured. In three decades it has grown from one race to nearly 30 world-wide and has made history with distinguished events and inspirational athletes.
Athletes range from those who aim to set course records, through top those who want to do personal bests, through to those who just want to finish the course.
The event is organised by USM Events and they start to ready the course a couple of weeks before the event with signage and warnings of road closures. They have their procedures well organised and everything runs very smoothly. Sponsors for the 2013 event include Tourism and Events Queensland, Sunshine Coast Council, Sunshine Coast Destination Ltd, Cyclezone Mooloolaba, Big Cart Track Sunshine Coast, and Toyota.
